About the only advantage fiberglass has on mineral wool is price. Mineral wool beats fiberglass in fire resistance, soundproofing, and durability. It’s naturally mold-resistant and doesn’t require chemicals to achieve these qualities. Plus, it’s easier to handle and install.
Batts are pre-formed sheets of insulation that fit between studs, joists, and rafters — they’re perfect for standard cavities in new builds. Loose-fill mineral wool, on the other hand, is ideal for retrofits or filling irregular cavities, such as in walls or attics, where batts can’t do the job. Loose-fill also provides better coverage for soundproofing and fire resistance in existing structures. If you are looking for the most natural option, loose-fill mineral wool doesn’t contain the chemical binders necessary for batts.
With a relatively higher density and weight, blowing mineral wool requires a professional-grade blowing machine for installation. For proper installation, you’ll need at least 150 ft of 4″ corrugated hose and enough power to achieve at least 1.5 PSI at the end of the hose. If you don’t already have a capable insulation blowing machine, you’ll need to rent or purchase the right equipment to get proper coverage. Fortunately, we can help you there too.
